THE VERDICT

A properly built standalone surf venue with real culture around the wave, not just a machine in a box. The best option in Berlin by default, and good enough that it would stand out anywhere.

OVERVIEW

Wellenwerk is Berlin's only indoor surf wave, open since 2019 in Lichtenberg, running a Citywave standing wave in an 18-metre pool. It is standalone rather than embedded in a waterpark or mall, and has built out the surrounding culture properly: a surf shop, a working surfboard workshop, a restaurant and a beer garden all sit on the same site.

THE WAVE

The wave breaks at about 1.6 metres and runs 8.5 metres wide, which the venue claims is the widest in Germany. Water and air are both held around 25 to 27 degrees, so it runs the same in February as in August. A coach is in every session, and video review is available afterwards.

BEST FOR

Berliners who want consistent water time in a city with no coast within three hours, and anyone working on rail control and turn repetition. The on-site board workshop and shop make it a genuine surf-culture hub rather than just a wave you book.

PRICING

Advanced and pro training sessions run about 49.90 euros, with beginner and intermediate sessions at about 59.90 euros because they include coaching. Kids sessions are about 49.90 euros. A beginner course runs about 199.90 euros, and exclusive private bookings range from roughly 499 to 799 euros. Multi-passes are valid for three years, which is unusually generous.

PLANNING

Book ahead for evenings and weekends. First-timers should take the beginner course rather than a standard session. The restaurant and beer garden are open to non-surfers, so it works as a group outing where not everyone rides.
