The most ambitious surf park announced in Germany, on a brownfield site with land secured, university research partners and a national federation behind the training centre. The wave system is the open question, because no vendor has been named and the technology is described only as compressed air.
SURFWRLD is a planned surf park on the 17-hectare site of the former Werne colliery, beside the River Lippe in the Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia. The plan pairs a 242-metre main basin with a smaller second pool so beginner sessions can run alongside, and it is the largest surf project announced in Germany. The team reported a purchase agreement on the land after two funding rounds, with site preparation due to begin in January 2026 and a first surf season targeted for spring 2027.
Waves are generated with compressed air. Beyond that the project has kept the system confidential while patents are pending, and no vendor has been named, though renderings have been read as resembling the Endless Surf pneumatic layout running at o2 SurfTown. SURFWRLD states a 242-metre main basin producing surfable waves up to 2 metres, wave fronts up to 150 metres wide, and research waves above 3 metres. The research figure is the giveaway that this is not purely a leisure venue: the basins are designed to be used for hydraulic and civil engineering work in the off-season.
Nobody yet, because there is nothing to book. If it is built to the stated spec it would be the largest wave pool in Germany by a wide margin, in the most densely populated part of the country, within reach of Dortmund, Munster and the whole Ruhr conurbation. Surfers in North Rhine-Westphalia currently have three standing waves and no lagoon, so this is the project to track from that region.
No pricing announced. The project has published spending on planning rather than a build cost: over 400,000 euros on environmental studies and expert reports, and about 3 million euros on preliminary planning and consulting. Total construction cost has not been stated.
Nothing to book and no visitor access to the site. The next meaningful signal is whether construction actually started in 2026 as planned, since the spring 2027 surf target depends on it.
