Canada's most advanced full-size surf park project, with land use approved and construction under way, 45 minutes from a large city with no surf. 2029 is the target.
South Britannia is a Wavegarden Cove planned for Britannia Beach, on the shore of Howe Sound between Vancouver and Squamish, which the developer, Tiger Bay Development, calls Canada's first full-sized surf park. It anchors a master-planned community on a former gravel quarry, with 900 market homes and 150 rental and affordable homes alongside tourist accommodation and retail. The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District gave the rezoning its final reading on 28 May 2025. The SLRD issued a development permit for environmental improvement works and initial site works on 27 August 2026, and The Globe and Mail reported in September 2026 that shovels are in the ground; the comprehensive development permit for Phase 1, including the surf park, is still under review and is expected to go to the SLRD Board in fall 2026. Phase one, including the surf park, is expected to be complete in 2029.
A six-acre Wavegarden Cove lagoon, the platform at The Wave in Bristol, Lost Shore in Scotland and DSRT Surf in California. Placemark and Daily Hive report up to 1,000 waves an hour, from reforming waves for beginners to barreling waves for pros, and the Squamish Chief reports room for up to 80 surfers at a time. The module count has not been announced.
Metro Vancouver surfers, who otherwise face a ferry and a long drive to Vancouver Island's surf. It is also on the Sea to Sky corridor, which already carries destination traffic to Whistler.

Nothing to plan yet. If you are in the area before it opens, Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island is the region's real surf destination, and East Point Reef Club at Bridal Falls is the other British Columbia surf pool in progress. Signals to track for South Britannia: the SLRD Board's decision on the development permit, expected in fall 2026, the supplementary Phase One permit, and a confirmed Wavegarden module count.

When does South Britannia Surf Park open?
South Britannia Surf Park is under construction, with opening expected in 2029. Construction has only just started and the timeline has moved before: the project was introduced in 2019 and 2029 is now the phase one target. The site is a former quarry on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99). Nothing is bookable, and the full community build-out runs well beyond the surf park.
