South Britannia

South Britannia is a master-planned community on the shore of Howe Sound at Britannia Beach, British Columbia, built on a former gravel pit beside Highway 99 between Vancouver and Squamish. Its anchor amenity is a Wavegarden Cove that the developer calls Canada's first full-sized surf park. The site is about 45 minutes north of Vancouver, 20 minutes south of Squamish, and an hour from Whistler.

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has approved rezoning for up to 1,050 homes across the full build-out: 900 market units and 150 non-market affordable units, as 560 townhouses and 490 apartments rather than detached lots. Tourist accommodation is planned alongside the homes, including a surf hotel and boutique cabins, plus up to 43,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and a bus transit hub next to the town centre.

Phasing puts the amenities first. Phase One covers the surf park, a beach house with restaurant, bar, cafe, retail and surf academy, cabins, saunas and hot tubs, targeted for 2029. The development permit for the surf park was submitted earlier in 2026 and site work began in late August 2026, The Globe and Mail reported. Homes and the village core follow from 2030, with the full community from 2035. No home pricing has been released.

Note the timeline history before treating any date as fixed. When the project was introduced in 2019, the Squamish Chief reported an anticipated 2023 opening for the surf park; in December 2023 Daily Hive reported a timeline of sometime in 2027; the current target for first surf is 2029.
