THE VERDICT

Atlantic Park Surf delivers a genuinely functional tiered progression system and the Wavegarden Cove produces consistent, reliable waves across the full skill range. At $91-$161 for about 12 waves per session, the cost-per-ride math is steep, so arrive knowing exactly which level you are booking and what you want to work on.

OVERVIEW

Atlantic Park Surf opened in August 2024 as the first Wavegarden Cove installation in North America, sitting at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront inside a larger 4.3-acre mixed-use district. The 2.67-acre lagoon runs 55-minute sessions across seven skill tiers, from gentle whitewater for first-timers through overhead hollow waves for experienced surfers.

THE WAVE

The Wavegarden Cove generates traveling waves that peel across a section the park calls 'the Reef.' Wave settings are grouped into two families: the Malibu series (M2 through M4) produces rolling, open-face peelers aimed at progression, and the Turns series (T1 through T3) produces punchier, steeper performance waves. The Beginner session runs slow-moving whitewater, good for pop-ups. Progressive bumps up to waist-to-stomach-high, slow-peeling open-face waves at M2 and M3 settings where longboards, grovelers, and soft-tops all work. Intermediate uses M3 and M4 for chest-high waves with steeper sections, appropriate for linking carves and snaps or working on noseriding. Advanced uses T1 and T2 for punchy head-high waves built for snappy turns and quick cutbacks. Expert sessions run T2 and T3, reaching head-to-overhead with hollow sections for barrel riding. As of spring 2025, Advanced, Expert, and Pro sessions all offer a choice between a turns setting and a barrels setting. The machine can produce up to 1,000 waves per hour, but each 55-minute session averages about 12 rideable waves per person.

BEST FOR

Intermediate to advanced surfers wanting structured repetition on consistent, predictable waves get the most out of a session here. Beginners can absolutely learn: the Beginner and Novice sessions use controlled whitewater and slow-peeling open-face waves, and the Progressive session includes a soft-top and wetsuit, removing the gear barrier. Longboarders are specifically catered to through the Malibu settings, which are designed for noseriding practice. The park is less useful for surfers chasing tube time on a budget, since barrels only appear at Expert and Pro level sessions, which sit at the top of the price range.

PRICING

Sessions run 55 minutes and cost between $91 and $161 per person depending on wave level and season (peak summer vs. off-peak). That works out to roughly $7.60 to $13.40 per wave at the cited average of 12 waves per session. The Progressive session includes a soft-top surfboard and wetsuit at no extra charge. A sunset beach pass (lagoon-side access without surfing) costs $10 after 5pm. Cabana packages and a two-session bundle with two beach passes are also sold. Atlantic Park Surf Club memberships were made available for a limited time at launch. Outside food and beverages are not permitted; all food and drink must be purchased on site within the wider $350 million Atlantic Park development.

PLANNING

Book sessions online in advance, especially for summer weekends when intermediate and above tiers tend to fill up. Lower-tier sessions (Beginner, Progressive) are both cheaper and easier to get into last-minute. If you just want to watch, the $10 sunset beach pass from 5pm is reasonable for the lagoon-side atmosphere. Wetsuits, boots, gloves, and hoods are available on-site for cold-water sessions, and the wading pool is heated when the lagoon cools. Check the session calendar before booking: the park updated its wave programming in spring 2025 and the lineup at intermediate and above had changed from the August 2024 opening configuration. The wider Atlantic Park district includes The Dome concert venue (3,500-cap, 70,000 sq ft indoor-outdoor), restaurants, and shops, so there is easy pre- or post-session infrastructure.
