Riyue Bay Surf Resort opened on 11 November 2025 in Wanning, on the southeast coast of Hainan Island, billed by its developer, China Tourism Group, as China's first resort inspired by surf culture. It sits beside the natural Riyue Bay surf break. The wave pool runs PerfectSwell technology from American Wave Machines, on a campus of more than 10 hectares (25 acres) that also holds two hotels with 132 rooms between them and a retail district.
The pool uses a 30-chamber pneumatic PerfectSwell system that makes waves from 0.5 to 2.7 meters (about 1.5 to 9 feet), a new wave every six seconds, with rides of up to 18 seconds. The resort announced 23 programmed wave patterns across four zones it calls Heavy Wave, Medium Wave, Light Wave and Gentle Wave, from first-timer settings up to waves for advanced surfers; its booking partner lists private sessions with barrels and aerials at the pro level.
Intermediate and advanced surfers get the most from the upper settings, and beginners are catered for in the Gentle Wave zone and beginner sessions. It is a logical addition if you are already traveling to Hainan for the natural surf at Riyue Bay, which is right next door.
The resort's own prices were not available to check. Booking agent Surfway Hainan, a PerfectSwell destination partner, lists 55-minute public sessions at 458 CNY for complete beginners, 388 CNY for experienced beginners, 408 CNY for intermediate, 528 CNY for advanced and 580 CNY for pro, noting these are high-season rates for July, August and national holidays. Check visa rules before you go; Surfway Hainan says citizens of 61 countries can visit for 30 days without a visa. Pair pool sessions with the natural break at Riyue Bay next door. Sanya Phoenix International is about 80 miles and an hour and a half away by road, and Haikou Meilan about 92 miles. The two on-site hotels have 132 rooms between them, so book early.
