The Jochen Schweizer Arena at Ludwig-Bölkow-Allee 1 in Taufkirchen, about 15 minutes south of Munich, runs an indoor Citywave standing wave as one attraction inside a larger adventure complex that also has an indoor skydiving wind tunnel, a high ropes course, racing and VR simulators, and the Phoenix Kitchen & Bar.
An indoor Citywave standing wave, set to each group's level: gentler for beginners, more powerful for advanced surfers, and a full-power Pro wave. Water and air are kept at 25°C year-round. A visit takes about 90 minutes: around 10 minutes to kit up, 15 minutes of briefing and 30 minutes on the wave. Beginners surf in groups of up to six, first holding a rail and then free, with an instructor throughout. Surfers must be at least 10.
Munich locals wanting turn practice year-round and indoors, and groups where not everyone wants to surf, since the rest of the complex gives non-surfers plenty to do. It is a different venue from O2 SurfTown, the Endless Surf lagoon in Hallbergmoos on the other side of the city.
Every session is 30 minutes on the wave. Adult beginner sessions (18+) are from €59.90 and include an instructor, board, wetsuit and gear; kids' and family sessions from age 10 are from €49.90. Book online in advance, especially at weekends. By car, take the A8 exit Taufkirchen-Ost. If Munich is the trip rather than the wave, the free Eisbach river wave in the Englischer Garten is the city's other famous standing wave, though it is for experts only.
