irie surf

irie surf runs an open-air Citywave standing wave in Freiburg im Breisgau, at Hermann-Mitsch-Straße 13a, right by the Messe Freiburg tram stop. It opened in 2025 and pitches itself as a place to hang out as much as to surf, with a café, food, music and events, and entry to the platform is free.

A Citywave standing wave ridden in place, taught in levels. The Beginner course (Level 0) starts with about an hour of theory and warm-up, then 30 minutes on the wave in a group of up to six with a coach in the water. The Progressive course (Level 1) is 30 minutes of warm-up and 30 on the wave, with coaches at the side. Intermediate (Level 2) and Advanced (Level 3) sessions are 30 minutes on the wave in groups of up to six, and run only with at least three people booked. Kids' courses are recommended from age 6 with a minimum weight of 30 kg.

Freiburg and Black Forest locals, and anyone travelling the Rhine corridor who wants a session with a community feel. Watching is free, so it works for groups where only some people surf.

Intermediate and Advanced sessions start at €41 and the Progressive course at €57. The Beginner course, with its hour of theory, starts at €73, and the Kids course at €54. A Ladies Surf & Brunch beginner course starts at €67. Multi-session tickets come in packs of 10, 25 and 50 and are not transferable. Take the tram to Messe Freiburg; the wave is right by the stop, next to XXXLutz. Arrive 20 minutes before your session. Entry is free and the café makes it an easy hang for non-surfers, and dogs on a lead are welcome.
