citywave Tokyo Sakaimachi

citywave Tokyo Sakaimachi is an outdoor Citywave standing wave in Sakai-machi, Ibaraki Prefecture, which celebrated its second anniversary in April 2025. Despite the name, it is not in Tokyo: it is about 35 miles by road from Tokyo Station, three minutes from the Sakai-Koga interchange on the Ken-O Expressway, and a Hawaii-themed glamping resort is a 30-second walk away.

A standing wave ridden in place, run in four courses. The beginner course is for people who have never surfed or cannot yet stand, on soft boards, which are compulsory at that level. The intermediate course runs a 100 cm wave with a face to work with, the advanced course uses the same water volume at a steeper angle for surfers who can already control the board, and a kids' course is for swimmers from age 6 to junior high. The pool is shallower than an adult's waist.

Tokyo-area surfers wanting repetitions without driving to Shonan or Chiba, beginners who want a first standing-up experience, and anyone combining a session with a night at the glamping resort next door. It is a different proposition from Surf Stadium Japan, a PerfectSwell lagoon in Shizuoka.

Beginner, intermediate and advanced sessions each cost 10,780 yen including tax, and a kids' session is 7,546 yen. Board, wetsuit (rash guard in summer) and helmet rental are free; bring a swimsuit. Session length can change with the number of people booked. Bookings are online only and paid in advance by card; cancellations more than 72 hours before the session are fully refunded, and later ones are not. Check the news page for maintenance closures before travelling. By car it is three minutes from the Sakai-Koga interchange on the Ken-O Expressway. By public transport, a highway bus runs from Tokyo Station to the Sakaimachi bus terminal next door in about 90 minutes; alternatively, take a bus from Tobu-Dobutsu-Koen or JR Koga station to the Sakai depot stop (about 40 minutes) and walk 15 minutes. Changing rooms and showers are on site, and the glamping resort is a 30-second walk away.
