citywave Tokyo Sakaimachi is a standalone outdoor Citywave standing wave that opened in Shinagawa, Tokyo in 2018 on a four-year lease, then relocated and reopened in 2023 at Sakai-machi in Ibaraki Prefecture. The brand kept the Tokyo name after the move, so the location is about 60 kilometres northeast of the city rather than in it.
The wave runs around a metre for beginner and intermediate settings and steps up for advanced riders, across four skill tiers including a kids programme. Boards and wetsuits are included in the session price and instructors run every slot, capped at ten surfers.
Tokyo-area surfers wanting reps without driving to Shonan or Chiba, and anyone combining a session with a stay at the glamping resort next door. It is a different proposition from Surf Stadium Japan, which is a PerfectSwell lagoon in Shizuoka.
An adult session is 10,780 yen and a kids session 8,910 yen, tax included, with board and wetsuit provided. Sessions run 60 minutes with four or more surfers, dropping to 30 minutes for groups of three or fewer, and entry to watch is currently free.
Confirm opening dates before travelling, as it closes for maintenance blocks. The Aloha Glamping Resort is a 30-second walk, which makes an overnight trip straightforward. Gear is included, so travel light.
