HOW IT WORKS

The classic FlowRider pumps a thin, fast sheet of water up an inclined surface, ridden in place on a flowboard. FlowSurf uses deeper water so riders can use regular surfboards with fins; the Shredmill at Waco is a 10-metre-wide face for turns, 360s and airs.

BACKGROUND

FlowRider is a sheet-wave system invented by Tom Lochtefeld, whose company Wave Loch opened the first FlowRider at Schlitterbahn in Texas in 1991. Wave Loch sold the FlowRider IP and technology to WhiteWater West in 2014; by 2018 more than 230 FlowRiders were installed worldwide, mostly in water parks, resorts and cruise ships. FlowSurf, FlowRider's newer deep-water technology, debuted in 2026 at the Shredmill at Waco Surf, at Surflux in Luxembourg and at ADRENA on the Red Sea. FlowRider says its engineers based the design on how mangrove roots smooth water flow, to cut the turbulence of older standing waves.
