THE VERDICT

For a mid-level surfer wanting an honest, repeatable practice environment within driving range of Austin or Dallas, Waco is one of the best options in the US, and The Runner delivers. Price it out fully, including board rental and the pre-session hour, and know the full-power expert setting requires a private booking.

OVERVIEW

Waco Surf is a PerfectSwell-powered wave park on a ~500-acre resort property in Waco, Texas, about 90 minutes from both Austin and Dallas. Built on the bones of BSR Cable Park (which opened in 2002 and added the wave pool in 2018), it was rebranded under new ownership in 2021 and now runs three tiered public wave sessions plus private rentals, a cable/wake park, and an on-site hotel and cabin complex.

THE WAVE

The 2-acre PerfectSwell lake fires lefts for 30 minutes and rights for the remaining 30 in a standard public session, one direction at a time. Three named settings cover the range: The Coaster (beginner) is a slow, rolling ground-swell 3-wave set: knee-to-thigh high, with whitewater and a small green face, forgiving enough for first-timers. The Runner (intermediate) steps up meaningfully: chest-to-head-high, lined-up walls with distinct sections for linking turns; the official site flags it as 'closer to the advanced setting than the beginner setting,' so be honest with yourself. The Peak (advanced) offers steeper takeoffs, punchy sections, shoulder-to-overhead faces (6-ft face, 8–10-second rides), and lanes for both head-dip barrels and air sections. Waves average 30–60 yards in length. The highest-performance settings (full expert/air launch) are reserved for private rentals. The resort also runs a separate deep-water stationary wave with a 4–5-ft face pitched at intermediate-to-expert riders who want to drill carves and 360s.

BEST FOR

Intermediate surfers with a solid foundation who want a concentrated hour of turn-linking on The Runner. It's long, consistent, and honest. Beginners benefit more here than at many other wave parks because The Coaster includes a board and in-water coaches, not just a safety briefing on the deck. Groups and multi-day trips work well given the resort infrastructure (hotel, cabins, cable park). Surfers who want lefts and rights in the same session get both.

PRICING

Public sessions run by tier: The Coaster (beginner) $89–$129 + 8.25% Texas tax; The Runner (intermediate) ~$149 + tax (~$161 all-in); The Peak (advanced) ~$159 + tax (~$172 all-in). Board rental is included only for The Coaster. Intermediate and advanced surfers either bring their own board or pay extra to rent. Private sessions (full pool, customizable wave mix, 30–50 waves per hour) normally run ~$1,999/hour; a winter promo (late Nov–early Jan) has offered 50% off. A TripAdvisor reviewer calculated the intermediate session at roughly $10 per wave, which is a fair way to frame the value question. Off-peak (non-summer) pricing is on the lower end of the stated ranges.

PLANNING

Book sessions well ahead, especially Friday–Sunday in summer. They sell out. Overnight guests (hotel, cabins) get a priority booking window before sessions open to the public, which is the main practical reason to stay on-site. If you've surfed here before, the check-in time drops to 20 minutes prior. The resort is ~90 minutes by car from both Austin (AUS) and Dallas (DFW). Flying into either and driving is the standard move for out-of-state visitors. Peak season hours run 6am–11pm; off-peak is typically 8am–6pm. Wetsuits are available to rent in winter and early spring. The resort's photography and video setup is well-regarded and worth using for a first visit.
