HOW IT WORKS

A hydrofoil the size of a bus runs along a rail beside a long freshwater lake, dragging a swell behind it that breaks against a precisely shaped lake bottom for the wave's entire length. Because one foil generates one wave at a time, rides run roughly 45 seconds with multiple barrel sections and the wave is identical every pass, but sessions run as a queue rather than a continuous rotation of surfers. That trade-off, one long, repeatable, world-class wave instead of a high hourly wave count, is the system's defining design choice.

BACKGROUND

Kelly Slater Wave Co was founded around 2008 by eleven-time world champion surfer Kelly Slater to develop the technology behind Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California, which he revealed publicly in December 2015. The World Surf League's parent company, WSL Holdings, acquired a majority stake in the company in 2016 with the goal of building a network of high-performance training and competition facilities around the same technology.
