HOW IT WORKS

A 100-ton hydrofoil runs along a track beside a long freshwater lake dragging a swell that breaks against a shaped lake bottom for the wave's length. At its 2015 unveiling the wave ran about 45 seconds with barrel sections. Because one foil makes one wave at a time, sessions run as a queue of heats rather than a continuous rotation: one long, repeatable wave instead of a high hourly count.

BACKGROUND

Kelly Slater Wave Co was established around 2008 by eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater to develop the technology behind Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California, which he revealed in December 2015. In May 2016 WSL Holdings, parent company of the World Surf League, announced an agreement in principle to acquire a majority stake in the company, envisioning a global network of high-performance training centers using the technology. In 2026 WSL Holdings sold the company to an LA-based real estate fund in partnership with Kelly Slater, according to a WSL spokesperson quoted by Stab. Its second public installation, Surf Abu Dhabi, opened in 2024.
