The CM7 is a standing-wave system: a surfer rides a stationary, continuously flowing wave face rather than paddling into a wave that travels down a pool. Ka'ana describes the system as bathymetry-agnostic, meaning it doesn't require the pool floor to be shaped a specific way to produce its wave, which is part of what let it run as a temporary pop-up installation before East Point Reef Club's permanent build.
Ka'ana Wave Co was founded by Canadian inventor James Alexander Watson, who first conceived the idea in 2012 after watching water form a barrel shape in a drain in Peru. The company built its first model-scale CM7 unit in 2016, validated the design with computational fluid dynamics by 2019, and ran its first small pilot pool in 2021. A two-month public pop-up at Britannia Beach, British Columbia in 2022 gave the CM7 its first real-world testing and won an IAAPA Brass Ring Award for Best New Product that year. East Point Reef Club in Bridal Falls, BC is its first permanent installation.
