Olucas Surf Center is a proposed surf resort in Villaverde de Pontones, in the municipality of Ribamontán al Monte, about seven kilometres from Somo on the Cantabrian coast. The promoter, Olucas Cantabria, plans a Wavegarden lagoon of about 23,000 square metres on a site of around 100,000 square metres, with spaces for training, restaurants, accommodation and wellness, for a private investment of more than 40 million euros. It registered the project with the Government of Cantabria on 25 June 2026, the day regional president María José Sáenz de Buruaga announced it. Because municipal planning rules do not allow the project, the promoter asked the region to process it as a Proyecto Singular de Interés Regional (PSIR), and the government has started that process.
Olucas has signed Wavegarden as its technology partner to build the pool. The PSIR application describes Wavegarden's electromechanical wave generation, which the company says uses between 0.3 and 1 kilowatt-hour per wave, and a closed lagoon that needs about 30,000 cubic metres of water a year to replace evaporation. Module count, wave settings and capacity have not been published.

When does Olucas Surf Center open?
No opening date has been announced for Olucas Surf Center, which is under development. Nothing has been approved yet, and the PSIR route is contested: parliamentary groups have questioned the public interest of a private surf pool, the project has drawn misgivings in the village, and the municipality has summer water restrictions. A privately promoted PSIR also has to go before the full Parliament of Cantabria, which scheduled a debate on it for 13 October 2026. At the June 2026 presentation, approval was estimated to take up to a year and a half, before any construction.
