THE VERDICT

The strongest version of this project in ten years of attempts: a 5.5-acre Wavegarden Cove backed by a joint venture of Twin Point Capital, Highgate and South Street Partners with Broadway at the Beach's owner Burroughs and Chapin, on a site the planning commission has already backed for rezoning. The city's 20 million dollar incentive pays nothing until construction is 80 percent complete, which means Myrtle Beach is exposed only if the park nearly exists. March 2030 is a long way out and the history here is of dates moving.

OVERVIEW

A 5.5-acre Wavegarden Cove planned for a 28-acre site at Highway 17 Bypass and 21st Avenue North in Myrtle Beach, on the former Palace Theatre parcel next to Broadway at the Beach. The plan pairs the lagoon with a hotel of at least 150 rooms, surf cabins, a lazy river, swimming pools, and more than 20,000 square feet of food, beverage and retail space. Total investment is set at a minimum of 150 million dollars, and the current opening target is March 1, 2030. The project has no consumer name yet: the city files it as Project WGMB, and the developers describe it as the surf resort at Broadway at the Beach.

THE WAVE

A large-format Wavegarden Cove, the same platform running at The Wave in Bristol, Lost Shore in Scotland and Alaia Bay in Switzerland. A Cove produces up to roughly 1,000 waves an hour along both sides of a central pier, and can run different settings on each side at once, which is what lets a beginner reform and an advanced barrel section share one session window. Module count has not been announced, so the exact wave menu and hourly capacity are not yet public.

BEST FOR

Myrtle Beach draws roughly 20 million visitors a year, and the city's own analysis projects 364,000 annual visitors for this park. That points at a family and vacation crowd first. For East Coast surfers it would be the second Cove-class lagoon in the region after Atlantic Park in Virginia Beach, about a six-hour drive north.

PRICING

No pricing announced. Atlantic Park in Virginia Beach is the closest reference point on the East Coast, and Cove sessions elsewhere in the United States have opened in the 90 to 200 dollar range depending on wave setting.

PLANNING

Nothing to book. The site sits beside Broadway at the Beach, which is already a working entertainment district with parking, restaurants and an aquarium, so the surrounding trip does not depend on the park opening.
