Surfers Cove, Portugal's first wave pool, is due to open in December 2026 in Óbidos, on the Silver Coast north of Lisbon. No exact day has been announced, but the operator is already selling early bird session packs, and construction has been under way since July 2025.
What is being built
The centre of it is a 46-module Wavegarden Cove on a five-hectare site. Wavegarden says the system can generate up to 1,000 waves an hour with a menu of more than 25 wave types, from soft beginner waves to high-performance settings, and sessions run for about an hour. Two Surf Eye cameras will film every wave for video and progression stats.
Around the lagoon, Surfers Cove is building a four-star surf village of 56 prefabricated bungalows for up to 144 guests. The whole project is a more than 25 million euro investment funded by private money and EU funding, and The Portugal News reports it will be the first Wavegarden pool in the European Union. Olympic silver medallist Kanoa Igarashi is an investor and founding member.
What it costs
The early bird campaign, launched on 15 July 2026, sells packs of 1, 3, 10 or 30 sessions at 60 to 73 euros per session, with discounts of up to 30 percent on the larger packs. Surf village stays start at 217 euros a night with a two-night minimum. Vouchers are valid for the first six months after opening. Standard prices have not been published yet, so the early bird rate is the only firm number for now.
For comparison, 60 to 73 euros is roughly $68 to $83, and the median beginner lagoon session across the parks in our price index is about $84.
Getting there
Fly into Lisbon; the site is about 55 minutes by car from Lisbon Airport. Óbidos itself is a walled medieval town, and the Silver Coast's ocean breaks are close: Peniche is about 20 minutes away and Nazaré about 35 minutes.
Good to Know
A December opening means winter conditions and wetsuits from the first session. If you buy early bird sessions, the six-month window after opening is the one to plan around.
